Lame Goat Zine - SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Anything spec-fic (i.e., horror, sci-fi, fantasy) will be considered. Character development and writing style will be heavily determining factors. If you have to ask whether something belongs, then it probably doesn't. Preferred length is from 500 words to 2500 words. Although acceptances will be posted as soon as they come in, the issue "best-of" will not be announced until the end of the month. Twelve issues per year, only FIVE stories per issue. Once five acceptances have been granted for a particular issue, subs are closed until the beginning of the following month. All subs must be sent to William Wolford at lgzeditor@yahoo.com with "ZINE SUB" in the subject line. Please include a cover letter with publication history and a short bio to be published along with your story if you are selected for publication. LGZ is a 4-the-luv market, and no compensation will be given (aside from exposure). Multiple subs are fine (but no more than two at a time), simultaneous subs are not. Reprints welcome as long as you tell us where they originated. Good luck! :D

Howl: Dark Tales of the Feral and Infernal

What I am looking for in this anthology is something off the beaten path: strange tales about the struggle between man and the animal-beasts of myth and legend. I am looking for horror, so that means scary. Please nothing campy, or written with the inference that it might make a really bad "B" movie. I'm not looking for "The Poodle Monster from Camp Kickapoo". You may be as creative as your heart desires, and the more bizarre and gripping, the higher the chance of acceptance. I am looking for stories that have a very strong supernatural element, are highly descriptive, and have good plot and character development. I would also like to make a brief note on grammar. If you are that character that likes to wing it (down a few Red Bulls and then fly through a thousand words without double checking them), you probably won't make it past me. To thine own self be true. I don't mind working with you if there are a few simple corrections that can be made, but don't send me unedited drafts that look like they came from a chop shop. The meat of this anthology will not be werewolf stories, but if you insist on going that route I will take a few if they are exceptional. What I want is something original, so surprise me! No multiple submissions, no reprints, no exceptions.

The word count will be roughly 80,000 words. Average story length should be between 1000-4000 words. Send your story in .rtf format with the title line "Howl Submission-(story title)" to editormc@yahoo.com. Please include a cover letter with word count of submission, your name, address, email address, and list of writing credits. Also include a brief 100 word or less bio in the third person. Bio information should reveal something about your writing style, what inspired your story, or something relevant to that. Don't talk about your dogs, hamsters, or how much you watch Judge Judy. Keep it interesting, but professional. It should also be noted that this is a 4-the-luv antho, and as such no compensation (either in the form of monetary payment or contributor copy) will be given.

ONE poem or flash fiction piece will also be accepted with which to open the antho. I will be providing the cover art for this anthology and a few inside illustrations which will be picked at random.

Deadline for this anthology will be March 15th ‘10. Final entries will be announced at that time. Please contact me if you have any questions. Good luck!

The Next Time: Alternate Reality/Time Travel

I'm looking for stories (500-5000 words) involving alternate reality and/or time travel. This will be a speculative fiction book (i.e., sci-fi, fantasy, horror). Anything spec-fic will be considered, and you can mix genres.

Also, I'm looking for ONE poem with which to open the anthology. I'll only accept one story per writer, but if you were to send in a poem and a story, then I might accept both.

The deadline is January 1st, 2010 or until filled.

No One Can Hear You Scream: An Anthology Of Deep Space Terror

Announcing the second in the "Guest Editor Series" of Lame Goat Press books.

I'm looking for stories (500-5000 words) that take place in deep space, on board ships, space stations, asteroids, or any manner of natural or man-made satellite. These stories should contain an element of horror. Space Horror. You can use monsters/aliens, whatever you need for your story so long as it takes place in deep space and is scary. I will be VERY selective regarding zombie stories, so be warned.

I am not going to talk about originality or doing things in new and unusual ways. We all know what makes a good story. That is what I am looking for.

The deadline is January 15th, 2010. NO decisions will be made until after the deadline. FIRM.

John Arthur Miller (JAM) from Liquid Imagination has come up with a publishing idea involving (so far) 5 publications:

Lame Goat Press, House of Horror, Silver Blade, Liquid Imagination, and Static Movement

What we are going to do is take two stories from each publication listed here and two totally new stories never before published and put them all in a book entitled: Dreams and Screams - it's a fantasy/horror book. Here is the pay scale:

Each story is paid $10.00.
Cover artist would receive $10.00.
We'll have one poem to launch the work. Poet receives $10.00.

Two stories have already been selected for this (and they will remain a secret for now), but I am open for two new stories for the publication. Mainly, though, I want something that stands out. The minor details might make the cover a little overloaded, so the skeleton in the ground would be a good idea. But, again, it's an idea--if you have a better one, I'd love to hear it. I think something in red would be nice though.

The theme of the anthology revolves around affection, whether it be through horrific or loving means. What this means to you will be what inspires your cover piece. A skeleton is not required, nor are any of the other optional pieces that could be added. We want to see what YOU, the artist, think of the prompt. We want to see YOUR unique version. The idea is provided for a basis of the author's original idea, but is open to interpretation in other ways.

Inner Fears Anthology

Announcing the first in the "Guest Editor Series" of Lame Goat Press books.

I'm looking for stories (1000-5000 words) about a character who has an inner fear. Whether it's your inner fear or a fear of one of your characters doesn't matter to me. The genre will obviously be horror, but I'll be flexible on what other elements it has (sci-fi, fantasy, etc.). I'd prefer third person stories where the fear really grips the reader. I'll accept some first person narratives if they're well written, but as I'll probably receive an abundance of those, they must be VERY well written to be accepted.

Also, I'm looking for ONE poem with which to open the anthology. I'll only accept one story per writer, but if you were to send in a poem and a story, then I might accept both.

Unless I absolutely fall in love with a story, I won't be accepting anything until after the

deadline, which is December 20th, 2009.

Want To Edit An Antho For LGP?

Lame Goat Press is offering an opportunity to compile and edit an antho to be published by LGP. For those interested, please send a query to cjacobsmeyer@msn.com with the following: theme of the antho that you wish to put together, a sample of your BEST writing, and a brief blurb about why you want to be part of LGP’s staff.

You would be responsible for creating detailed guidelines, reading subs, sending out acceptances and rejections, editing the acceptances, and compiling the acceptances into a single document.

Although this is a non-paying position, you would be receiving valuable editing experience. Anything speculative is fair game, whether it be fantasy, sci-fi, horror, or any combination thereof…let’s see what exciting ideas you can come up with! :D

Kings Of The Realm: A Dragon Anthology

For Lame Goat Press's second foray into the world of anthologies, we've decided to take on dragons. You've got your typical sword & sorcery dragons, and then you've got your zombie dragons, wild west dragons, cyberpunk dragons, etc.

LGP's Next Project Announced!

I'm happy to announce that Lame Goat Press, for its second project, will be publishing a collection of short stories by Kody Boye, tentatively titled An Amorous Thing. Given the state of finances, family life, and other issues, this should be released early to mid '11. Kody's work is top notch, and I'm excited to be working with him on such a collection! :D

What HTTA REALLY Needs

The antho's half filled, and we're severely lacking on fantasy and sci-fi tales, folks. Sure, this is a horror antho, but we need more tales from the Middle Ages and the distant future time periods. Sword & sorcery is cool as it would equate to the Middle Ages, and anything sci-fi would qualify as the distant future. Maybe some post-apocalyptic pieces as well...you get the idea. I won't be accepting any more pieces from the present unless they're exceptional and fit the overarching theme well. Bring the stories on, fools! :D

Writer's Block?

First, let me start off by saying congrats to the following for their acceptances into HTTA:

Second, I'd like to announce that my collaboration with Kody Boye has proven both fruitful and successful. Last Stand Of The Frat Boys will be published in the upcoming Zombology V anthology by Library of the Living Dead Press.

Third, I have interviewed Chris Bartholomew of Static Movement. The full interview can be found here.

I've been pumping out story after story lately, the results of which can be found in the columns to the right of this post. I've been writing whatever inspires me at the time: The Ninth Floor (based on a bizarre dream I had a few nights back), Moving Day (based on a traumatic event I experienced a year ago), and various other pieces for anthos that looked cool at the time.

Is it wrong that I look at Duotrope's tonight and just not feel it? I know I shouldn't complain given my HUGE success in the field just over the last two months, but my Type A is starting to kick in. That, and my extreme lack of patience.

I think I'm going to lay back from the writing for a while and instead concentrate on the significant editing and formatting job I have ahead of me with HTTA. Speaking of which, submissions are still being accepted for it. We could use some pieces from the medieval period and possibly a few more for the distant future period. *coughhinthintcough*

I'm excited to announce that Lucas Pederson has agreed to do the cover for HTTA! The details are being worked out at the moment, and I'll leave what I have in mind for the cover a surprise for the time being. Y'all need something to look forward to, right? ;)

I never would have imagined that HTTA would be attracting such big names in the genre. For those of you who think I'm overreacting, I think they're just being modest. This antho is going to totally ROCK!!! :D

Three Acceptances In Three Days

It's been a pretty eventful weekend on the publication front. First, my story "Earl Gridmon" was accepted into Shadows & Light (Pill Hill Press). Believe it or not, it was my fourth attempt at inclusion. All I can say is that persistence pays off. Second, my story "Master Of The Cape" was accepted by Moon Drenched Fables, and will appear online in Dec. I'm not used to writing for PG audiences, and I was a little surprised that I only needed to take a single line out. Third, I received an early acceptance for "Black Gold" in Pill Hill's Bitter End antho.

More importantly, some major decisions have been made regarding Horror Through The Ages. An imprint has been created, namely Lame Goat Press. Hopefully, HTTA will be the first in a long line of anthos for us. Its forum has just been launched and can be found here: LAMEGOATPRESS.PROBOARDS.COM. If you haven't thought about subbing yet, now's the time. If I have to fill this damned thing up myself, I will. Fortunately, some help in the talent department is forthcoming.

I don't think you want to read my stories anyway. ;)

Horror Through The Ages

This is an anthology that I’m putting together, and there is no guarantee that it will be published. I’ll do my best to seek out a publisher for it, though. No payments, and no contributor copies. This is an amateur effort, and as such I will be unable to reimburse you. This is strictly for the love of writing.

I’m looking for horror stories (500 words to 5000 words in length) that take place across a number of time periods: stone age, middle age, modern day, future, etc. Sci-fi and fantasy are cool, but let’s try to get a variety of time settings.

Pins & Needles

Of Serpents And Shadows is currently being held for consideration. Only issue was the length: it has to be twice as good as two 5k word pieces it would replace. This week is gonna be hell for me waiting for an official decision. ESPECIALLY now that Jean Rabe has received an acceptance. Hell, I've got nine of her novels on my bookshelf. The stakes have never seemed higher.

My collaboration with Kody Boye is proving fruitful. We're almost at the 5k word mark, and our story promises to be an action-packed zombie smasher.

My first online publication, The Demihumans Three Meet Their Match, will appear in Defenestration Thursday. A nice mixture of fantasy, politics, and humor rolled up into one. ;)

If all goes well (once I've completed my sub for Wolfology, of course), I'll be moving on to Awakenings Of Vengeance full swing. I already have a foundation of 10k words, and it it will probably be in the neighborhood of 75k words upon completion. For all you zombie lovers out there, you won't be disappointed. I have quite a few plot twists planned, and I'll be damned if I include a dull moment. Once again, hold me accountable, PLEASE!

Friggin' Word Caps

You know what my biggest challenge is? Beside being patient, of course. Adhering to word caps. I've got the perfect piece for this one antho I desperately want to get into, but there's a big problem. It's 4k words too long, and the ending hasn't even been written yet. Arg.

Well, last night I was able to dispose of 4k words by getting rid of a side story that wasn't essential to the main plot. But...I still have the ending to write, and no room for it. Now I need to start figuring out what to cut next. A little bit here, a little bit there...I just hope that the finished product will be left pretty much intact. Here's to hopin'.

Vacation Fund

With the acceptances for Letters from the Dead and Zombology IV today, I decided to use my income from writing for next year's vacation fund. My wife was skeptical at first, but when she found out how much I've made in the little time that I've been submitting thus far, she got excited. Call me eccentric, but I did the math. $88.84. A nice little chunk of change, but by this time next year, I'm hoping to have ten times that amount. Hold me accountable, please! I need all the help I can get. ;)

A Double-Edged Sword

I got some good news and some bad news today. First, the good news. I waited three weeks to get a response for my Zombonauts submission, and I'm extremely pleased to say that Out Of Gas got accepted! That put me in an awesome mood for the day, and really helped lessen the blow when I got the reject from Analog. At least they told me to consider using 12 pt. Courier font for future submissions. "Future submissions". That means they want to read more of my pieces, right? Hell, I have to look for the best in every situation, else I'd go insane.

My next project is a collaboration with novelist Kody Boye for the Risen Cadaver Collaboration. I'm lucky to be working with such a talented writer. Here's to hoping that we can pump out some good stuff!

Double The Fun!

I'm happy to say that a very close friend of mine will be published alongside me in the Oct. '09 issue of Twisted Dreams. This particular issue will feature his first published piece: Send Me To An Early Grave. Domenik Lopane has been writing for at least as long as I have. There is a project that the two of us are working on together. Awakenings Of Vengeance, a horror novella (or novel depending on how it turns out) will see the light of day once we get our lazy asses moving. Well, that and we both have family lives to contend with. Try explaining that to our wives.

In other news, my short story The Merits Of Grease will be appearing in Baconology, an upcoming bacon horror anthology. This is real, folks, I kid you not. Imagine a repo man from the bayou with a custom rifle. If that's not enough to whet your appetite, too bad. I shan't reveal more.

One thing I've been noticing lately is that my acceptances have all been for horror-related pieces. Ironic given the fact that I've never considered myself a horror author. I write mostly fantasy with a healthy does of sci-fi thrown in, but only a smidgeon of horror. I guess that my stories just evolve the way that they will. Anyhow, I guess that I'll stick with horror for a while and see what comes of it. I'm crossing my fingers now hoping that my short story Out Of Gas will be accepted into the Zombonauts anthology. Man, that would make my month.

It's About Damned Time...

Welcome to Wild's Words, the blog of Christopher Jacobsmeyer (that's me). My online friends know me as Wild Weasel, or Wild for short. The purpose of this blog is to detail my writing endeavors.

I've been writing for over ten years (since Oct. '97 to be exact). I've always been serious about my writing, but it wasn't until recently that something happened to kick my butt into high gear.

A friend of mine had indicated that he was going to submit a short story of his to Analog magazine. I thought the story was pretty good, mind you, but I thought he was a fool at first. My impression had always been that it was near impossible to get published on any front.

I thought about it that night and the next before realizing that he was right. Go big or go home. He was confident about his writing, so why couldn't I? My wife confirmed this notion,so I started setting my plan into motion.

At first, I printed off a copy of The Flying J and painstakingly formatted it for the benefit of the good editor over at Analog. Call me a copycat if you will, but Analog seemed like the best market for it at the time. I sent it out via snail mail almost three weeks ago.

Shortly thereafter, I decided to see what I could do with the rest of my stories. I discovered a great site called Duotrope's Digest and came to the realization that markets could be found for almost anything. Sure enough, I submitted a handful more.

Over the course of the last week, I've received acceptances from Twisted Dreams Magazine (for my short story Who In The What Now?) and The Middle of Nowhere: Horror in Rural America (for my short story 14).

For those of you who think it's a tough market out there, get cracking and write something. Doesn't matter what as long as you write it with passion. Someone will find a home for it. Heck, I'm living proof of that.

Pardon the plainness, here. Blogging is a relatively new thing to me. I'll do some housekeeping. Eventually.
